Sweet Homemade Boba Tea

Talking all things sweet homemade boba tea

Today was a busy day for me, I had to shoot a few reels… not 1 but a few! And trust me that took it out of me. I find myself really tired from standing all day and trust my Rheumatoid Arthritis ain’t happy about it either. I decided that when my reels were done, I would sit back and enjoy this refreshing sweet homemade boba tea.

Boba is known as a bubble tea. The main base is a sweet tea and tapioca balls are added to it. They’re soft and chewy and have a gorgeous texture that really adds to the tea. It originated in Taiwan and I am so thankful for that! I love making my own because I use fresh fruits. For this recipe I used fresh blueberries.

I made this boba from fresh blueberries and boiled that down to a compote and then added my tea. It’s really so easy to make and they can keep for a while as well. You can make a batch and leave some aside for the next time you want some tea.

Tips on how to make Sweet Homemade Boba Tea:

  1. Make you tea first and set it aside so it can cool. This drink is similar to an ice tea but with milk added.
  2. You can add whatever milk you like, I used oat milk and it was so delicious!
  3. Don’t make your dough too dry. If the dough is too sticky, roll the dough with tapioca starch in between your hands.
  4. Once you’ve rolled them, make sure to cover them in tapioca starch so they don’t stick to one another. And there you have your sweet homemade boba tea.

Can I keep my boba if I don’t use it all?

If you don’t want to use all the boba you’ve made, don’t stress, I got you! Make a simple syrup and place the leftover boba and simple syrup in a jar. Make sure it’s covered with plastic wrap/in an airtight container. This will keep for up to 3 days.

Sweet Boba tea has been around for decades and I can understand why! This tea is filled with Boba which is a chewy, sweet ball and these ones are made from fresh blueberries. It is such a lovely surprise at the end of the tea.

Ingredients

  • 150g fresh blueberries

  • 1/2 cup caster sugar

  • 2 tbsp. water

  • 1 cup tapioca starch

  • 1 tbsp. honey

Directions

  • In a small pot, combine the blueberries and sugar, allow to simmer on a medium heat for about 12-15 minutes, once they are broken down and it looks like a jam, remove from the heat, add in the water and stir to combine.
  • Make your desired mug of tea and allow to cool while you make the boba.
  • Allow to the mixture to cool for about 15 minutes, then add the tapioca starch 2 tablespoons at a time. Start off by mixing with a spoon and then use your hands to knead the dough. If you don’t need all the tapioca, then leave out the excess.
  • Put the boba in a pot of boiling water, once they float to the top, turn off the heat, cover the pot and allow them to rest in the pot for 20 minutes.
  • Strain the water out, add 1 tablespoon of honey stir to combine and then in a glass, add the boba, some ice blocks and the tea and enjoy!

      Hi Amber,

It’s a Weck glass, they’re pretty hard to find but so good for
      everyday coffees and cold drinks.
