Easy Homemade Garlic Naan Recipe

Let’s bake!

It’s a very rainy day in Cape Town today and it only felt right to make fluffy, garlic naan! This easy homemade garlic naan recipe is perfect as a wrap, with a curry or honestly just on its own. I usually find that making bread and proving dough can be very tedious. But this recipe really makes it all worth it. I love how comforting this bread can be. A dough like this is very versatile and can be used to make naan rolls as well. I will make a separate recipe for that.

What I love about this easy homemade garlic naan recipe is that it makes 10-12 naan flatbreads. However, if you find that you don’t need them all, you can freeze them. This really makes meal prepping so much easier for the week to come. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!

How to store and freeze the easy homemade garlic naan recipe

The naan can keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. Make sure it is kept in an airtight container or cover tightly in foil. If you want to freeze the extra naan, make sure it comes to room temperature. Thereafter, place in a ziplock bag and place in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Tips to make the best naan:

  1. Make sure that your yeast has bloomed. To know if your yeast has bloomed, it should look frothy and foamy on top. The way to achieve this is to make sure your water or milk is warm (40-43C). I like to touch the water/milk with the back of my hand. If it doesn’t burn or isn’t too hot, then it should be fine to add the sugar and yeast. Make sure to whisk well before covering with a cloth and setting aside.
  2. Allow the dough to rise. The dough should take about 1 hour to rise. Once the balls are formed cover them with a tea towel while your start rolling your first one. The ones that are covered will rise a bit in the meantime. The second rise isn’t necessary but it will happen while they wait.
  3. Make sure your skillet is medium to high heat. Spray the skillet/pan with a nonstick spray or add a small amount of a butter to the pan. This isn’t necessary either, but it will give the naan a nice brown finish on the parts that char a little.
  4. Roll the dough out to no more than 1cm of thickness. This will make sure that dough puffs up while cooking and that the dough is cooked through. A thicker dough is also fine, but it will take longer to cook through.

What can I pair with my easy homemade garlic naan recipe?

You can have this with almost anything. It is basically a flatbread or wrap but way better! I like to pair it with curry which is how it is enjoyed traditionally. However, these are perfect for an easy dinner used as wraps or even a quick sandwich.

Ingredients

  • Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup warmed water

  • 2 tsp. white sugar

  • 2 tsp. instant yeast

  • 3/4 warmed milk (lukewarm)

  • 3/4 cup plain yoghurt

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

  • 4 cups cake flour

  • 1 tsp. baking powder

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil to grease a clean bowl

  • Garlic Butter
  • 1/3 cup melted butter

  • 1/2 tsp. minced garlic

  • 2 tbsp. chopped parsley

  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Directions

  • Method
  • Warm your water and place it in a small bowl with the sugar, whisk to combine.
  • Then add in the yeast and whisk again.
  • Cover with a towel and place in a warm, draft free area for 5 minutes.
  • Once it has bloomed (see above), add in the milk, yoghurt and oil and whisk to combine.
  • Then to a stand mixer with a dough hook, add the yeast mixture to the bowl and then add in the flour and mix for about 5-8 minutes on a medium to high speed.
  • Once the dough starts to pull away from the sides it is ready.
  • Add olive to the clean bowl to grease the sides, place the dough inside, grease the top a bit as well.
  • Then cover the dough with a tea towel and place it in a warm space and let it rise for 1 hour.
  • When the dough is ready, divide the dough into 10-12 pieces.
  • Create round dough balls on a lightly floured surface.
  • Then roll the dough out into an oval shape , place into a hot skillet with some nonstick spray.
  • Cook until both sides are golden brown. The dough will probably rise and puff up during cooking.
  • Remove from the heat and immediately brush it with the melted butter mixture.
