Foodtography School Course Summary

Foodtography School

All the information you need

I have been wanting to write this blog post for the longest time. I’m sure a lot of you have many questions about the course, so I am going to spill the Tea today! I took this course in May 2020 and for those of you who have been with me for a while, would’ve seen the difference. My images were, in my opinion, “okay”. But after taking this course, I realised that I still had a lot to learn. Im going to break up each section of “Foodtography School Course Summary”.

What is Foodtography School?

Foodtography School is an online, digital learning platform. This course teaches you the ins and outs of photography, styling, composition, lighting, marketing, social media and more! If you are like me, and are currently or wanting to pursue a career in food photography, THIS is the course you need to look into. I have seen a massive difference in my work and my followers have too.

Who is the founder of Foodtography School?

Sarah Crawford is the founder and teacher behind Foodtography School. She also her own Instagram called @bromabakery where she has quite literally become the queen of light and bright photography! Her page focuses on baking sweet and decadent desserts as well as tips and tricks in food photography.

So what’s in the course?

The course I took in 2020 has since had a massive revamp! The new course has many more facets to it and a lot more one-on-one tutorials where you get to see how to shoot and style in real time. Let’s dive into the Foodtography School course summary:

courses

Fundamentals of Food Photography:

If you have never picked up a camera but want to, this section is the introduction and explains everything. I really thought I knew everything about my camera but I was proven wrong. This Unit helps you to understand aperture, ISO and shutter speed. These are all very important in achieving in the image you want. If you are starting out, this section helps you to learn all the basics. SO this course is definitely not only for advanced photographers, it’s for everyone!

Composition:

Composition is styling your scene in a way that makes it easy for the eye to look at it. It is not just about putting stuff together and hoping it looks nice. I learned there is a system to styling and if you do it well, the viewer actually enjoy looking at it more. This section explains how to add movement to an image and there are live tutorials where Sarah shows you how she styles, for you to better understand.

Lighting in the Foodtography School Course Summary

This is possibly one of the most important sections, for me it really changed the game. Here you will learn how lighting can change the mood of an image and what tools you need to make lighting more harsh or soft. You will also learn how to standardise your lighting so that all your images have a similar look and feel to them. This is great for brands because if your work reflects more or less what they want, they will want to work with you.

Branding:

Branding is not just about having similar looking images, it is about how the world sees you. This is your business and creating a name for yourself is just as important as taking the perfect image. This unit will help you to find YOUR brand and create that aesthetic where people know your work without you saying a thing.

Editing:

The editing unit is very useful and I find myself referring to it often. I also love using the Foodtography School presets which come in handy often! They have a large variety to choose from and you get the “light and bright” bundle when you sign up as well. The editing really shows you how to manipulate shadows, how to colour correct and a lot more!

Money Money Money:

I’m going to be real with you, this is an investment course, and that’s why the prices may seem high. I saved up to take this course because I really wanted to make a career out of this. Within a few months of taking this course and practicing like my life depended on it and I got the full return of the price of the course. This course is geared to help you make a business out of what you are learning and that’s why I find it so valuable.

Added Bonus:

This new revamped course also has many more tutorials showing you how Sarah styles and shoots a scene. This is so helpful because you get to see exactly how she goes about it. There are also workbooks which help you to keep track of everything and “homework” that you can do. All of this really helps you to understand how to put what you’ve learnt into practice.

The before was shot before I took the Foodtography School Course and a year later is the after image. I was able to create a better composition to really show off the pie, adjust the colours correctly, use a diffuser to soften the light and much more. These images are a visual representation of my progress and I hope you like them.
